It’s been about a week of wearing outfits from my minimal closet and I’ve been able to come up with a variety of outfits that are out of my comfort zone. Right now, I only have two jeans and a pair of shorts that fit – I’m still about a size up from my pre-pregnancy weight – so I was worried about redundancy, but it hasn’t really felt like a problem.

The weather in San Diego was hot, hot, hot last week, so summer outfits are in heavy rotation. It does get cool inside the lab at work so I got to try out some layering with a few new shirts.

Here’s a selection of a few outfits that were in the rotation this week:

Outfit 1

tradlands short sleeve |

[Shirt: Tradlands | Shorts: Anthropologie, old, Similar | Sandals: Avarcas]

I am loving these Avarcas sandals. They are so comfortable and easy to slip on, but are a little dressier than my other sandal options – an easy way to make any outfit look a little more put together. I wore this outfit on a 100 degree day before I had to change into long pants and head into my first day back at work after maternity leave!

Outfit 2

tradlands shirt + madewell jeans |

[Shirt: Tradlands | Jeans: Madewell | Sandals: Avarcas]

This outfit is definitely outside of my normal range of style. I got this button down shirt to wear as a layering piece and I generally really like the look of knotted shirts over high waisted pants, but something seems off to me with this styling. A little too waitress or something? I’m going to keep playing around with this shirt and see if I can find a way to wear it that suits me a little better. Unbuttoned, or maybe knotted over blue jeans. Stay tuned.

Outfit 3

Anthropology top + lucky jeans |

[Shirt: Anthropologie, old, similar, similar ethical | Jeans, Lucky Brand, similar ethical | Sandals: Avarcas]

This is a Classic Cassi look from top to bottom. It’s pretty much been my uniform for the past 10 years or so – jeans, comfy top, done. One of the reasons I wanted to try a capsule wardrobe was to force myself to wear outfits outside of what is the norm for me, but I find myself always going back to Classic Cassi. I can’t deny who I am!

Outfit 4

Chambray shirt + madewell jeans |

[Chambray shirt: Rails | T-shirt: Everlane | Jeans: Madewell | Shoes: Veja]

This is another new look for me and I’m really liking the knotted chambray over these black jeans. It works much better than the white over black combo from Outfit 2. These sneakers are super comfortable and ethically made – if you want to read a more detailed review, check this out.

Outfit 5

tradlands tunic + madewell jeans |

[Tunic: Tradlands | Jeans: Madewell | Shoes: Seychelles, old, similar, similar ethical]

And for the final outfit, another departure from my traditional look. I wore this little number out to my two year anniversary dinner this weekend. I wanted to wear something a little fancier, so I brought out the heels (I almost NEVER wear heels) and a new shirt dress. I usually avoid unfitted dresses and tops because they make me look frumpy. The jury is still out on this silhouette, but overall I really liked this outfit. It felt great to dress up and get out of the house without kids! Trust me, I was much more excited than my face in the picture implies. For next time, I might try belting the dress to see if that works better for me.

Take Homes from the Week

Novelty: I think I did a great job of getting out of my comfort zone and wearing outfits I wouldn’t necessarily have picked out in the past. Some worked out well and some didn’t, but I enjoyed trying them nonetheless. It is rewarding to feel like I’m actually using more of the pieces in my closet instead of just grabbing the same few shirts. And so far, no outfit repeats – we’ll see how long that lasts. I’m also guessing that after I get back into the swing of things at work I won’t be as excited about dressing up (it’s been four months since I had to wear something other than sweats!). That’ll probably mean I’ll slip back towards Classic Cassi more often.

Most worn item: Madewell black high rise skinny jeans. These are a new addition to my closet – my first pair of high-rise jeans since … ??? … and I’m digging them. It’s super timely for me that high-rise and mom jeans are in style because they are so comfortable on my mommy tummy. I had these jeans hemmed to above my ankle, but I’m wishing they were just a tad longer.

Goals for next week:

//1// Try and find a better way to style my white linen button down shirt.

//2// Wear a dress at least once. This is tricky because I have to keep my legs covered at work so it’ll have to either be on the weekend or a dress styled over jeans.

What do you think? Are you on the mom jeans bandwagon? Should I give the waitress look another try?
